Backflow Prevention Devices are commonly installed at the boundary of the property after the water meter. This is to protect the potable water supply and is referred to as containment protection. Where a Backflow Prevention Device is installed the Backflow Prevention Device must be registered with the local water authority.

A Backflow Prevention Device is required to be tested and certified upon installation, after any maintenance and every 12 months thereafter by a licensed plumber.

Your local water authority will send a certification notice annually to the property owner regarding maintenance and annual testing, penalties apply if the Backflow Prevention Device is not tested.

In Queensland local water authorities require containment protection on water and fire services to protect the community’s water supply.

There are three types of Backflow Prevention Installations;

1) Containment Protection – the Backflow Prevention Device is installed at the property boundary, downstream of the water meter of the property.

2) Zone Protection – the Backflow Prevention Device isolates an area or building within the property.

3) Individual Protection – the Backflow Prevention Device is installed at a point of contamination within the property.

Some properties may have multiple devices and is common in commercial plumbing situations.
